AEO
How long does AEO take to work?
Short answer
AEO results typically show up faster than traditional SEO — measurable citation lift within 30 to 90 days for well-structured content on a technically clean site, versus 6 to 12 months for equivalent SEO ranking gains. Speed depends on domain authority, content freshness, and how quickly AI engines recrawl the pages.
AEO moves faster than SEO for a specific reason: AI answer engines recrawl and reindex more aggressively than Google's classic organic index, and they rely more on structured data than on the years-long trust signal of backlinks. A well-structured new page on a mid-authority domain can start showing up in ChatGPT or Perplexity citations within weeks.
In a specific case my team ran, we took an automotive dealership from a 9.4% AI visibility score to 40.9% in 60 days by publishing clean, question-formatted content with strong schema across the highest-search-volume queries in the local market. That is not typical for SEO. It is typical for AEO when the technical foundation is right.
The 30 to 90 day range assumes: a technically clean site (fast page loads, valid schema, indexable pages), content that directly answers real queries in the first paragraph, and IndexNow or fresh sitemap pings to help engines discover new content quickly. Miss any of those and the timeline stretches.
Domain authority still matters. A brand-new domain will take longer than an established one. But even new domains can win citations for niche or long-tail queries within the first 30 days if the content is dramatically better structured than what already ranks.
The compounding effect is real. Once a domain is trusted as a source for a topic cluster, subsequent pages in that cluster get cited faster. Building AEO is front-loaded work with an accelerating payoff.
