Topical completeness
AI models want to cite sources that cover a topic comprehensively. A site with 40 in-depth articles covering GEO, SEO, and AEO from every angle is more citable than a site with 5 shallow posts on related keywords.
E-E-A-T signal density
Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness, amplified in GEO context. Every guide, article, and page should carry visible authorship with a verifiable professional identity, publication dates, and explicit credentials. AI models weight cited content higher when the author has a verifiable career.
Freshness and update frequency
Large language models are trained on web data snapshots. But AI search engines like Perplexity pull live web content and treat freshness as a positive signal. Updated content with visible modification dates outperforms stale content on the same topic.

Deploy Person or Organization schema on every page
Schema markup is the machine-readable layer that tells AI engines who you are, what you do, and why you are credible. Your site needs a sitewide @graph that includes Person (or Organization), ProfessionalService, and WebSite schemas, all cross-referenced by @id. This is the prerequisite every other GEO tactic depends on.
Claim your entity across the web
AI models cross-reference multiple authoritative sources to confirm identity. At minimum: claim your Google Knowledge Panel via Search Console, create a Wikidata entity (requires external references), complete your LinkedIn profile, set up a Crunchbase profile, and list yourself in relevant industry directories.
Create an llms.txt file at your site root
The emerging standard for communicating your entity directly to AI crawlers. Your llms.txt should state who you are, what your domain covers, your verified credentials, and what queries you should be cited for. Think of it as robots.txt for AI. Takes two hours to write and has no downside.
Write answer-first content on every core topic
AI models are optimized to answer questions. Your content needs to match that pattern. The opening paragraph of every article should directly and completely answer the primary question before any context, history, or caveats. Then expand. Content that buries the answer will be passed over.
Build a definitions layer for your core vocabulary
AI models get asked definitional questions constantly. If your site owns the authoritative definition of the terms in your domain, you get cited every time someone asks. Create dedicated /glossary or /definitions pages with schema-marked FAQ definitions of the 10–20 most important terms in your field.
Add FAQPage schema to every article and service page
Five Q&A pairs per article, properly marked up with schema.org/FAQPage, create five additional AI-citation surfaces per URL. Phrase the questions exactly as someone would type or speak them in a chatbot: conversational, specific, and intent-matched. Avoid marketing language.
Earn citations from authoritative off-site publications
Third-party citations are the GEO equivalent of backlinks, and the highest-weight signal in the model. A mention in Search Engine Journal, MarketingProfs, or any publication with real editorial standards tells AI models you are a trusted expert. Target 3–5 external citations per quarter.
Build social proof at scale
G2 reviews, Clutch profiles, Google Business Profile reviews, LinkedIn recommendations: each platform where your expertise is publicly validated is a signal AI models can verify. Perplexity actively pulls from G2 and Clutch when answering service-provider questions. If you are not on those platforms, you are invisible in those answers.
Monitor AI citation presence monthly
Open ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Claude. Search your name + specialty, your service + your city, and your core topic + consultant. Screenshot the results. Are you cited? Are competitors cited instead? Are the facts about you accurate? Do this monthly. Iterate on what is missing.
