Local SEO compounds over time. The businesses that invest in these fundamentals now will dominate their market for years. Here is the complete framework I use with Atlanta businesses and multi-location clients.

GBP Profile Optimization (10 Items)

  1. 1Complete every field in your Google Business Profile including services, products, and attributes. Incomplete profiles get outranked by complete ones regardless of review count.
  2. 2Choose your primary category carefully. It carries the most ranking weight. Add 3-5 secondary categories that accurately describe what you offer.
  3. 3Write a 750-word business description using natural language. Front-load your most important services and geographic area. No keyword stuffing.
  4. 4Upload 25+ high-quality photos including storefront, interior, team, and work examples. Add new photos weekly. Google rewards profiles that show ongoing activity.
  5. 5Post Google Business updates weekly with offers, events, or tips. Each post is a fresh signal that your business is active and engaged.
  6. 6Add your full service list with descriptions and pricing where applicable. Service entries show up in search results and give Google more context about what you do.
  7. 7Set your service area accurately. If you serve all of metro Atlanta, define the specific cities rather than using a radius. This helps you rank in each named city.
  8. 8Enable messaging if you can respond within 24 hours. Response time is a ranking factor and it converts warm leads who prefer chat over calling.
  9. 9Add your opening date. Businesses with a verified history get a minor trust boost, especially against newly created listings.
  10. 10Use the Q&A section proactively. Seed 10-15 common questions with thorough answers. These show up in your listing and reduce friction for potential customers.

Review Generation System (5 Steps)

  1. 1Create a short link to your Google review page using the Place ID URL format. Test it on mobile since that is where most reviews get left.
  2. 2Build a review request into your delivery workflow. The best time to ask is immediately after the customer confirms they are happy with the result, not two weeks later via email.
  3. 3Send a follow-up SMS or email within 2 hours of service completion with a direct link to your review page. Include a short personal note referencing the specific service. Messages with personalization get 3x the response rate.
  4. 4Respond to every review within 24 hours. Positive reviews get a genuine thank-you that mentions what you did. Negative reviews get a professional, empathetic response that takes the conversation offline.
  5. 5Track your review velocity monthly. You should be gaining at least 4-8 new reviews per month for a single-location business. If velocity drops, audit your request process and retrain your team.

Local Landing Page Template

Every service area and service type combination needs its own landing page. A plumber in Atlanta should have pages for "emergency plumber Atlanta," "water heater repair Atlanta," "drain cleaning Decatur," etc. Each page should include:

  • H1 with [Service] + [City/Neighborhood] naturally phrased
  • 300-600 words of unique, locally relevant content (mention landmarks, neighborhoods, local context)
  • Embedded Google Map showing your service area
  • 3-5 reviews or testimonials from customers in that specific area
  • Clear CTA with phone number and contact form above the fold
  • LocalBusiness and Service schema markup
  • Internal links to your main service page and other nearby location pages

Monthly Maintenance Checklist

  • Post 4+ Google Business updates with photos
  • Respond to all new reviews within 24 hours
  • Check for and fix any NAP inconsistencies across citations
  • Publish 1-2 new local landing pages or update existing ones
  • Review GBP Insights for search query trends and new keyword opportunities
  • Monitor competitor listings for new services or offers
  • Check for duplicate GBP listings and request removal
  • Audit call tracking data and update ad copy based on common questions
