What is E-E-A-T and why does Google care about it?

Short answer

E-E-A-T stands for Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness. It is Google's framework for evaluating content quality, especially on topics that affect people's health, finances, or safety. Content with strong E-E-A-T signals ranks better in Google search and gets cited more often by AI answer engines.

E-E-A-T is not a ranking algorithm you can directly optimize for. It is a set of quality criteria Google uses to train its ranking systems and to guide its human search quality raters. The signals it looks for are real: named authors with verifiable credentials, first-hand experience (Experience, the newest addition), clearly cited sources, transparent authorship, and a domain that consistently produces accurate content in its subject area.

Experience means the author has actually done the thing they are writing about. A case study written by the person who ran the engagement is stronger than a summary written by an outside marketer. Product reviews with real usage photos beat rewrites of manufacturer specs.

Expertise means the author has qualifications relevant to the topic. Credentials, prior work, certifications, publications, and job titles all count. Anonymous or under-credentialed content ranks lower on YMYL (Your Money or Your Life) topics like health, finance, and legal.

Authoritativeness means the site or author is recognized by others in the space. Backlinks from respected domains, mentions in industry publications, speaking engagements, and consistent presence in the topic help build this signal.

Trustworthiness is the umbrella. Accurate content, cited sources, clear author bios, real contact info, HTTPS, and a lack of misleading claims all reinforce trust. AI engines (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Google AI Overviews) weight these same signals heavily when picking which sources to cite.
